今天,我们来看看4月3号的大作文

上题:

More and more people no longer read newspapers or watch TV programs to get their news, and instead use the Internet to get news about the world. Is this a positive or negative development?

  • Body 1: The Internet has a wider range of news sources (than TV and newspapers).

Paraphrasing from the statement/question:

  • and instead, use = Instead of relying on

Standard Phrase for the “Reason and Solution” type of essay:

  • In my opinion, this trend is more positive than disadvantageous

Notes:

1) "is increasingly being used to receive": As you can see, there are 4 verb-based words being used in this clause. This would be considered as 'complex grammar'.

a)   'is being':  Present continuous 现在进行时 (happening now), using 'being' to show 'the state' of something. 这里的'being'表示现在的状态。

b)   'used' (is being used is the present continuous passive). 被动语态

c)  'to receive' (the infinitive following the passive verb 'used'). 接在'used'后边的不定式。

Standard IELTS Essay phrase:

Vocabulary and Collocations:

  • an infinite number of  无限的;大量的

Body 1 Notes:

1) As we always need to refer to all parts of the statement, I add "television and newspapers" here in order to: 

写大作文的时候,时刻提醒自己要覆盖题目里提到的所有aspects。所以在这里,我又提了"television and newspapers",目的是:

a) Satisfy that aspect of the scoring 

b) Set-up further comparisons between the Internet and TV/newspapers

c) Make a contrast (use a contrasting term as part of "extra" information)

2) When making this type of statement about what something can make, provide, facilitate, etc., use the rule of 3 (three items in a list — i.e. news sources, coverage, and perspectives). This can help show your range of vocabulary. 当提到某个事物或东西能带来什么的时候,最好列3点。在这一段,我列了通过网络获取新闻信息的3个优势。

3) I almost always start my sentence 2 of body 1 with the word "this". "This" is a relative pronoun (critical for C&C) and allows the writer to use the whole idea from sentence 1 represented in one word — "this". "This"是一个非常好用的代词,可以指代前文提到的观点。用好这个词能提高连贯性方面的得分。

4) My last, or finishing, concluding, or summarizing sentence, basically repeats sentence 1 but paraphrases it and is logically placed in order to conclude the body. 这段的最后一句是个总结句,其实也是对这段第一句做了一个总结性的paraphrase,前后呼应。

Vocabulary and Collocations:

  • instant availability of   即时性

  • fact-checking  真相核实

  • cross-referencing  交叉核实;交叉参照

  • presented facts  呈现出来的事实

  • search and investigate  搜索和调查

  • claimed facts  声称的事实

  • It could be argued  可能有人会说

  • needs corroborating 需要印证;需要证实

Body 2 Notes:

1) Since I am continuing my argument using my first point as the basis for the second point, I can again use the very useful word "this" with the phrase before it "Directly related to".

2)  Just like in body 1, I am adding more information in order to:     

a)  Refer to all parts of the statement

b)  Make a contrast with my main point

3)  This sentence helps to clarify what I mean in the previous sentence and is set in the hypothetical, using the phrase "If, for example, we read..., we can..." 这一句话的作用是通过举例,对前一句话做进一步阐释。

4) This part goes on to further explain my main topic of body 2, that namely by watching or reading news on the Internet, we are able to immediately and instantaneously check the veracity (truthfulness) of a 'fact'. 这一部分的作用是对body 2的主题做进一步阐释。
