Transcript

Qing Ming festival is a day of reverence for Chinese. People hold ceremonies for ancestors and sweep their tombs on April 5th every year. According to tradition, during the Tomb Sweeping, people put food in front of the tombs at new soil on the tomb, decorate the tombs with some fresh branches and knock head. A traditional Chinese painting named Riverside seen on the Qing Ming festival, drawn nine hundred years ago, shows the prosperous atmosphere and activities on that day. People returned from tombs sweeping with horses and packages in the picture. Now it is a public holiday in China. Although ceremonies have changed a little with time, Chinese still express their grief for the deceased.

Qingming is one of the twenty-four solar terms in China, typically falling on April 4-6 each year. The celebration for the Qingming Festival can be traced back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, with a history of over 2,500 years. After Qingming time, the temperature begins to rise up and rainfall increases, indicating that it is the crucial time for the farmers to arrange their farming activities accordingly. Meanwhile, it is the high time for spring outing, when people go out for fresh air, kinds of recreations and sports activities. More importantly, Qingming is also a period to honour and to pay respect to one's deceased ancestors and family members.

路上行人欲断魂;

A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day;

The mourner's heart is going to break on his way.

A cowherd points to a cot 'mid apricot flowers.

It drizzles endless during the rainy season in spring,

Travelers along the road look gloomy and miserable.

When I ask a shepherd boy where I can find a tavern,

He points at a distant hamlet nestling amidst apricot blossoms.

It drizzles thick and fast on the Pure Brightness Day,

I travel with my heart lost in dismay.

"Is there a public house somewhere, cowboy?"

He points at Apricot Village faraway.

Upon the Clear-and-Bright Feast of spring, the rain drizzleth down in spray.

Pedestrians on countryside ways, in gloom are pinning away.

When asked "Where a tavern fair for rest, is hereabouts to be found",

Qingming Festival

√ Jewish festival

√ Tomb-sweeping Day 清明节

√ To observe Qingming Festival
√ To observe Tomb Sweeping Day

√ Solar term:

It is the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, either 4 or 5 April in a given year.

√ sweep the tomb 扫墓

√ burn joss paper 烧纸钱

√ visit the cemetery 去墓园

√ pay respect to remember them 追思故人

√ We need burn joss paper and sweep the tomb on the Tomb-sweeping Day.

√ be gone 过世

√ be left  离世

√ I lost someone

√ someone is in a better place

√ rest in peace 安息

√ Green rice ball 青团

People in the Jiangnan region often eat this kind of green colored balls made from glutinous rice on Tomb Sweeping Day. The green color is from the juice of brome grass that is added in the rice.

√ Cudweed herb rolls 清明果

The best time to pick fresh cudweed herb is around Tomb Sweeping Day. The herb is often added in veggie rolls or dumplings and consumed on the day. In South China, people add the wild plant also in steamed buns.

√ Thin pancake

People in Xiamen in Fujian province often have thin pancakes on Tomb Sweeping Day. Dried seaweed, omelette, veggies and chili sauce are added in the pancakes to enhance the flavor.

The Qingming or Ching Ming festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English is a traditional Chinese festival observed by the Han Chinese.

It falls on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. This makes it the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, either 4 or 5 April in a given year.

During Qingming, Chinese families visit the tombs of their ancestors to clean the gravesites, pray to their ancestors, and make ritual offerings. Offerings would typically include traditional food dishes, and the burning of joss sticks and joss paper.

The holiday is associated with the consumption of qingtuan, green dumplings made of glutinous rice and Chinese mugwort or barley grass.
