我们在这个世界的境遇是奇怪的。每个人,不明缘由地到此进行一次短暂的访问, 并且有时也能察觉到某种超自然的目的。然而,就日常生活而言,有一件事情我们心知肚明:那就是我们是为别人而活,总的来说,主要为这些人而活:那些人的笑容和幸福是我们快乐的源泉,还有无数的陌生的灵魂与我们生命相连,并让我们心生怜悯之心。每天我都时时在想,我的肉体和灵魂在很大程度是建立在我的同胞的劳动之上的,包括活着的以及逝去的人,因此,发自内心地,我必须竭尽全力去回报我的一切所得。每当想到我从别人的工作中承袭太多,我就情绪低落,平和的心态也被扰乱。总的来讲,从客观的角度看来,无休止地思考自身生存的理由或者生命的意义纯属愚笨。然而,每个人都怀揣一些理想来引导自己的志向以及做是非的判断。我的理想是善良、美丽、真实,它们总是在我面前闪烁光芒,并且让我的生活充满喜悦。以舒适与享乐为目标的生活,对我从来没有过吸引力,因为在此基础上建立起来的伦理体系,只能满足一群牲畜的需要。

Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose.From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men – above all for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received. My peace of mind is often troubled by the depressing sense that I have borrowed too heavily from the work of other men. •••
To ponder interminably over the reason for one’s own existence or the meaning of life in general seems to me, from an objective point of view, to be sheer folly. And yet everyone holds certain ideals by which he guides his aspiration and his judgment. The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.
