Some experts suppose that when a country is already rich, any additional increase in economic wealth does not make its citizens happier. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 

这次的题目说实话不简单啊，因为涉及到财富的分配，社会的公平和科技问题，可能很多同学想观点都会觉得挺难想的，具体讲解请听语音哈~

Some people argue that in rich countries, citizens will not become more pleased with any new increase in economic wealth. However, I do not agree with this opinion.

Admittedly, for those who live a high quality of life, the economic development may not bring them extra happiness. According to the hierarchical theory of needs proposed by Maslow, humans will try to satisfy upper-level needs after their physiological and safety needs are met. For citizens living in rich countries, many of them may not worry about the physiological and safety needs as those who live in less developed countries do, and what these citizens pursue may be the esteem needs or even self-actualization needs, and earning more money may not bring them a sense of joy. Nevertheless, this does not necessarily mean that citizens of rich countries are indifferent to economic development.

To begin with, if the vulnerable groups can benefit from new economic development, most citizens will still become happier. It is noteworthy that when new wealth is created, in most conditions, it is not equally distributed to all groups of people, and this leads to the wealth gap in almost all countries including the rich ones. However, if a government focuses on equity when new wealth is created and distributed, it will help to improve the quality of life of those vulnerable groups, such as the disadvantaged. Therefore, how the new wealth is distributed will determine whether citizens, especially the vulnerable ones, feel happier or not.  

In addition, sustainability will play a crucial role in determining whether citizens are satisfied with new economic growths. For the past decades, many industries have developed rapidly, but simultaneously, such development often results in environmental pollution. If wealth is created through burning more fossil fuels, this may not please citizens in rich countries. However, if a rich country creates more wealth in a sustainable way, such as developing alternative energies, this will bring its citizens more happiness.

In conclusion, even for citizens of rich countries, they will feel happier when new economic wealth is generated, but the premise is that the additional wealth is generated in a sustainable way. Similarly, if generating new wealth can help to address the wealth gap in rich countries, it will please many citizens.
