 “Tell me about it”是“快告诉我”，理解错了好尴尬！

Tell me about it

看到这个表达，很多同学可能会直接翻译为“告诉我这件事”，确实有这个用法，比如下面的例句：

You did right to tell me about it. 

你把这件事告诉我，做得很对。

I let her tell me about it in her own way 

我让她用自己的方式告诉我那件事。

但在口语中，“Tell me about it”还有一个高频用法，表示对方说的事情或者经历你有同感，翻译成中文就是“可不是嘛”。

--His attitude is driving me crazy.

他的态度真的快让我疯掉了。

--Tell me about it.

可不是吗！

除了这个，英语中还有几个跟“说话”有关的俚语，大家也容易会错意：

You can say that again

这句话，不要按字面意思理解为对方真的让你把话重复一遍，又或者中文里面含有威胁的语气：“再说一遍试试”，它真正的意思其实是对方完全赞同你的看法，表示“说得对；说得好”。

—"Must have been a fiddly job."

“那一定是件精细活。”

—"You can say that again."

“说得太对了。”

You don't say

这句话有两种意思：

①表示惊讶，“不会吧？真的吗？”相当于"OMG"（oh my god）或者口语中的“No shit”

'I'm a writer.' — 'You don't say. What kind of book are you writing?' 

“我是作家。”——“不会吧。你写哪方面的书？”

②对对方的嘲讽，“是吗？”，相当于“呵呵”

--Don't mock me! I'll beat him.

别取笑我了，我一定会打败他的。

--You don't say!

Say uncle

在英语国家，小孩子打架的时候，谁占据了上风或打赢了，他就会让输的一方说“say uncle”。类似中文里面的“快点叫爸爸，我就放过你”。如果要表示“从不认输或永不认输”，我们可以用“never say uncle ”这个短语来表达。say uncle等同于cry uncle.

I refused to say uncle no matter how they threatened me.

无论他们怎样吓唬我，我都不肯服输。

He never says uncle.

他一向嘴硬，从不认错。

Tell on

告发，检举

Never mind, I won't tell on you. 

别担心，我不会告发你。

Money talks

She talks big, but can't produce anything.

美国俚语，意思是“说蠢话”

照相时为什么要说cheese？

英美人照相时，让人对着镜头喊 cheese，露出咧嘴微笑的口形。近年来，我国百姓照相时，喊与 cheese 声音相近的“茄子”，使口形呈现微笑的样子。但是，有的初学英语者在照相时喊与 cheese 音相近的 cheers，就不对了。cheers 的第一个意思是 a word that people say to each other as they lift up their glasses to drink，即“干杯”。第二个意思是 goodbye，即“再见”。例如：

I'd like to toast a cheers for your health.

我要为你的健康干杯！

Cheers then. See you later.

那就告辞了。再见！

 

cheese 是西方人的重要日常食品，汉语称为“奶酪”，又称“乳酪”、“干酪”，还有音译“芝士”、“起司”等。例如：

 

奶酪种类繁多，而法国和意大利奶酪最为著名。

There are many kinds of cheese and French and Italian cheeses are famous.

 

big cheese 具有 an important or powerful person in a group or organization的意思，即“重要人物”、“大人物”或“大腕”。例如：

His father is a big cheese in the bank.

他父亲是这家银行的重要人物。

Mac is a big cheese in the tennis world / in tennis.

麦克是网球界的大腕。

 

chalk and cheese 是个押头韵 ch- 的常用习语，字面意思指颜色相同、而结构和味道不同的“粉笔与奶酪”。其比喻意义是 completely different from each other，即“截然不同”。例如：

Although Jack and Dick are brothers, they are as different as chalk and cheese.

虽然杰克与狄克是亲兄弟，可是他们俩却截然不同。

 

西方各国由 cheese 构成的谚语有：

An apple-pie without some cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze.

吃苹果派不加点儿奶酪，就像是亲嘴不使劲儿。(英国谚语)
