Task1

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Professional athletes do not deserve the high salaries that they are paid.

Agree

I agree that professional athletes don't deserve the high salaries they get.

Excessive salaries lead many athletes to play professional sports just for the money. Some players will break their contracts and leave their communities and loyal fans behind for the sake of extra high salaries regardless of their collective interests. Some athletes even resort to illegal tactics, such as doping, to get paid more.

Some emphasize that athletes' high salaries are commensurate with the risks they take. However, even if athletes put in a lot of effort to reach the professional level, they shouldn't have to earn millions of dollars. Those police officers and firefighters who also positively impact society take even more risks in their jobs than athletes. Compared to athletes, their salaries are pathetically low.

To pay the excessive salaries of athletes, team owners often increase ticket prices or curtail services to cover players' high salaries to maintain a break-even operation. This may not be fair to the fans who have supported the team for a long time.

Overpaying for a player may affect the harmony of the team. After all, the game is not a one-person show but collective participation. Extremely high salaries for a few players may cause dissatisfaction or imbalance in the mindset of other teammates, which is detrimental to the development of the entire team.

Disagree

I disagree with the statement in the title. From my perspective, professional athletes deserve their high salaries.

Professional athletes earn their high salaries through a myriad of grueling competition and elimination processes. Their careers are often limited, and their best prime may be just a few years. Once they fail to produce results, they are gone, even though they may have already trained for decades for it.

It's basic economics. Athletes earn high salaries because of supply and demand. LeBron James makes insane amounts of money because people are willing to buy tickets to his team, watch him play on TV, buy jerseys, and all sorts of memorabilia. His amazing salary represents that he is unique and hard to duplicate. His value is determined by the market, not personal feelings. In short, high-end professional athletes are paid outrageous salaries because they generate excessive income - it's that simple. If that's the case, why shouldn't they be paid wages that reflect their true value?

To some extent, most athletes trade glory at the expense of hurting themselves. For that matter, their high salaries are worth it. Injuries are the foundation of their relatively short athletic careers and will remain with them for the rest of their lives. For example, many athletes respond to injuries by often resorting to corticosteroid injections, which can cause permanent damage to themselves. For these reasons, I believe their salaries are fair and reasonable.

Reading section:

Making community service required for high school graduation is not a GOOD idea.

1. Difficult to monitor; students may cheat, and the school has no way to monitor them; for example, if they do some work in their home garden, they will report that they helped their neighbor weed for two hours.

2. Students would feel that this is too utilitarian and would be reluctant to volunteer in the future; this would actually drive students away from community volunteering rather than closer to it. Forcing students to complete community volunteer service to receive a diploma will make them cynical, which is an ironic attitude toward such utilitarianism because people will not volunteer if there is no benefit.

3. Such a mandate is an infringement; it violates the students' rights.

Listening rebuttal:

The three questions can be answered.

1. The community service required by the school is organized by specialized agencies, i.e., it must be an activity carried out by recognized associations, and there is a list of which activities can be counted.  For example, suppose a student wants to have their work recorded as gardening. In that case, he needs to participate in gardening on the list run by neighborhood associations and do it in a public spot to be counted.

2. After participating in community volunteering, many high school students have a good experience, which does not keep students away from volunteering. For example, some students who went to the hospital to serve and those who did tutor said they had a powerful and great experience. The school requirement just provided more opportunities for them to have these diverse experiences. This will strengthen their motivation to participate in volunteer work in the future.

3. The requirement to participate in volunteer activities does not violate students' rights. After all, they would have been required to attend school and would have been required to attend classes; just like schools require students to attend math classes, there is no infringement, and the students can learn more. So it's not a violation that they are required to do volunteer activities.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

Nowadays, children rely too much on the technology, like computers, smartphone, video games, for fun and entertainment. Playing simpler toys or playing outside with friends would be better for the children's development.

Some teachers believe that it is good for students to use digital devices (such as computers, smartphones or tablets) to do their schoolwork at school. Other teachers believe that in the 21st century, students should not use digital devices at school. Which opinion do you support and why? 20200215

Some people think that some lessons for young children (age 5-8) which include video games can serve as effective and interesting ways of learning, while others think that these lessons are quite distracting and can be seen as a waste of time. What is your opinion and why? 20200923
