Learning from Las Vega
Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Steven Izenour

简介

Description

这一修订版包括旧版第一部分的全文——“on the Las Vegas strip”、第二部分——“Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed”、以及从第一部分的研究成果中归纳出建筑的象征主义和城市扩张的象征主义。

Learning from Las Vegas created a healthy controversy on its appearance in 1972, calling for architects to be more receptive to the tastes and values of "common" people and less immodest in their erections of "heroic".

This revision includes the full texts of Part I of the original, on the Las Vegas strip, and Part II, "Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed," a generalization from the findings of the first part on symbolism in architecture and the iconography of urban sprawl.

The Anti-Aesthetic
Hal Foster

简介

Description

The Anti-Aesthetic is a handsome new edition of the seminal collection of late twentieth-century cultural criticism. The Anti-Aesthetic was named a "Best Book of the Year" by the "Village Voice" and considered a bible of contemporary cultural criticism.

For the past twenty years, Hal Foster has pushed the boundaries of cultural criticism, establishing a vantage point from which the seemingly disparate agendas of artists, patrons, and critics have a telling coherence. In “The Anti-Aesthetic”, preeminent critics such as Jean Baudrillard, Rosalind Krauss, Fredric Jameson, and Edward Said consider the full range of postmodern cultural production, from the writing of John Cage, to Cindy Sherman's film stills, to Barbara Kruger's collages. “The Anti-Aesthetic” provides a strong introduction for newcomers and a point of reference for those already engaged in discussions of postmodern art, culture, and criticism.

The Laws of  Simplicity
John Maeda

简介

Description

In "The Laws of  Simplicity", John Maeda provides ten rules to balance the simplicity and complexity of business, technology, and design, that is, a guide to reducing demand and actually acquiring more demand. Through ten simplified business combing, covering the rules of technology and design, teach us how to spend less but spend more. Let us understand that simplicity equals reason.

Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on.

Tooling,
Aranda/Lasch

简介

Description

We all know that today's architectural design has moved from the sketchpad to the screen. The era of the Mayline and the drafting board now seems downright Paleolithicbut techniques for using the computer not just as a tool for rendering but as a generative instrument remain woefully unexplored. In Tooling, the latest installment in our renowned Pamphlet Architecture series, the technologically progressive young firm Aranda/Lasch illustrates how advanced computational methods and algorithmic codes can be used to foster architectural design.

Tooling explores patterns generated by computer codes that in turn create an organizational template assembling projects. By openly sharing these codes, the authors seek to foster further investigation into their methods, allowing other architects to model and evolve more critical and insightful geometries and patterns.

Change by Design
Tim Brown

简介

Description

The theme of "design thinking" was introduced in business schools. With the development of its concept, it has gradually become popular in the company and in more and more popular media. This is largely due to the leading design company IDEO and its famous chief The work of executive Tim Brown. This book shows how design techniques and strategies involve all aspects of the business.

The myth of innovation is that brilliant ideas leap fully formed from the minds of geniuses. The reality is that most innovations come from a process of rigorous examination through which great ideas are identified and developed before being realized as new offerings and capabilities.

“Change by Design” explains design thinking, the collaborative process by which the designer’s sensibilities and methods are employed to match people’s needs, not only with what is technically feasible, but what is viable to the bottom line. Design thinking converts need into demand. It’s a human-centered approach to problem solving that helps people and organizations become more innovative and more creative.

Informal
Cecil Balmond

简介

Description

Balmond is making the transition from structural engineer working alongside other architects to an architect in his own right. His structural thinking differs from that of others in his field, in its completely innovative conception of the engineer's contribution to architecture. The plasticity of architectural plans is enhanced through a decisive promotion of their structural designs. The borderline between structure and architecture thus becomes increasingly blurred. This process is explained in detail in "Informal" by reference to eight seminal projects. Balmond elucidates the theoretical basis of his engineering and architectural solutions, and his sketches transcend purely technical illustration - they are key to his approach. "Informal" invites readers to rethink their understanding of the relationships between architecture, design and engineering.
