不知不觉已经九月中旬，大家是不是都已经在课堂上了呢

听说霍格沃兹也已经开学了，大家都成功入学了咩

前两天我看了一篇外刊，就是介绍霍格沃兹fa学院的

然后就频繁地读到一个单词，大家也都认识

"spell"

看到这个单词不知道大家第一反应的意思是啥反正我是“拼读，拼写” 

spell 在这篇文章里的意思是“魔法，咒语”，

其实就是“熟词僻义”  ，  这里介绍几个大家不知道的意思

僻义：动词、名词皆有

1）作名词

咒语，符咒：

  例如： a magic spell 魔咒； The wizard recited a spell.巫师念了一道咒语。 cast a spell 施魔法

一段时间；休息期：

  例如： I spend a brief spell on the Washington Post.我曾在《华盛顿邮报》工作过一段时间。

魅力，魔力：

  例如： Even sensible Frank had fallen under her spell.甚至连一向理智的弗兰克都被她迷住了。

短语： under a spell 被迷住；着迷  under one’s spell 受某人魔力般的影响；对某人着迷

2）作动词

导致：

  例如： The crop failure spelt disaster for many farmers.对许多农民来说，庄稼歉收就意味着灾难。

替换，顶替：

  例如： Carter will be here in an hour to spell you.卡特一小时后过来替换你。

1. take a knock. 受到打击，蒙受经济或感情上的打击

2. at a rapid clip. phrase. 迅速地，快速地

3. rock the boat. phrase. 破坏现状，捣乱；（发表不同意见）使集体陷入困境

4. be devoid of. phrase. 缺乏；没有…

5. kill it at/in sth. phrase. 成功做某事，在某件事上表现出色

6. wind up with. phrase. 以…结束

8. come in handy. phrase. 派得上用场的

9. round up. phrase. 驱拢（牲口）；聚拢（分散的人或物）；围捕（罪犯等）

10. the tip of the iceberg. phrase. （事物）表面小部分；端倪

11. a far cry from. phrase. 相去甚远，大相径庭

原文：It is a far cry from the days when an answer scribbled in biro on the palm of a sweaty hand was all that stood between a candidate's success and failure.  (From: Beating Cheating)

翻译：这与过去截然不同，那时候候选人用圆珠笔在一只汗流浃背的手掌上潦草地写下答案（来作弊），就是决定成败的唯一因素。

 

例句：

12. racing certainty. phrase. 确定无疑的事（原指比赛做手脚）

13. be not above(doing sth). phrase. 会做…，屑于… （above 指不屑于，自视清高的意思）

14. on the premise of. phrase. 在…的前提下，以…为前提

15. fritter away. phrase. （一点点）浪费；磨灭

16. crowd out. phrase.（因空间时间不够）挤出，挤掉；排挤出

20. rack up. phrase. 积累；累计；击倒，获胜
