My opinions on Reading Books

According to Francis Bacon, "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested", which means that our readers should have different attitudes towards reading books. There are some books that should be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be ready wholly, and with diligence and attention.

First and foremost, we have to focus on those books which are recognized by people all over the world as classics. These books are rich in contents and wisdom, and can enlighten people to some extent. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters. For example, The Books of Songs is the oldest collection of poetry in world literature and the finest treasure of traditional songs left from antiquity. It was not only a mirror reflecting the Zhou Dynasty, but also the most valuable and important material in the study of the Chinese language in ancient times. As Stephen Owen tells us in his foreword, this book is "the classic of the human heart and the human mind", and as a result we have to devote much time to it.

However, not all books are classified as classics. There are some anachronistic books that should be tasted or even swallowed and abandoned. Too much attention on these books will only lead to a waste of time, and we can learn nothing either. Throughout our Chinese history, the Eight Legged Essay was one educational tactic that developed out of Confucianism. It was a rigorous written form used to test candidates for the civil service, mostly during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The stereotyped writing was so named because it is comprised of eight parts, each of which must be carefully composed according to a strict technique. Though it made up the entirety of civil service examinations in China for hundreds of years，this kind of essay had its adversaries and eventually became obsolete. Many argued that the essay's static format left no room for understanding the individuals being tested and claimed that it was simply a stock form where cliches could be entered at specific places. As a result, nowadays, there is no need for us to waste too much time in those stereotyped words and sentences.

A good book is often the best urn of life and possesses an essence of immortality. They introduce us into the best society and bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did, we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them. It is imperative for us to make a distinction between classics and useless books.
