Why women need the office

It is tempting for some women never to set foot in the office again, if their firms allow it, so they can devote time otherwise wasted on commuting or office chit-chat to more pressing family matters.
It is essential for people to work out on a daily basis.
set foot in:踏进,进入
She hadn’t set foot in the gym since she moved here.
Devote sth (time / attention / energy…) to sth:把…用于
She resigned in order to devote more time and energy to writing.
If more women work from home, and take on an even greater share of family responsibilities, the result may be an ever-bigger gender pay gap and an ever-harder glass ceiling.
Take on responsibility:
Her parents taught her to take on responsibilities for her own actions.
glass ceiling:职场玻璃天花板(妇女等在职务升迁上遇到的无形障碍)英文释义为the imaginary barrier that stops women, or other groups, from getting the best jobs in a company, etc. although there are no official rules to prevent them from getting these jobs.
Yet even in duller corporate settings, walking down a corridor, washing hands in the bathroom or making yet another cup of coffee in the kitchen, you are only seconds away from a chat or a joke. That can—admittedly unreliably and in ways that are difficult to measure—spur spontaneity and lead to new ideas.
Women determined not to waste a single minute when they could be multitasking will give up more than just professional advancement, important though that is. They are also giving up a sense of connection to others.
The cost, in the tedious aspects of office life, is tolerable. The returns, emotional as well as practical, can be immense.
What do you think of teleworking?
From my point of view, I think teleworking is tempting for some people as they can devote time otherwise wasted on commuting or office chitchat to more pressing matters. However, it’s also regretful for them to make this choice. People determined never to set foot in the office will give up more than just professional advancement. They also give up a sense of connection to others. In a working place, walking down a corridor or washing hands in the bathroom, people are only seconds away from a chat or a joke which may spur spontaneity and lead to new ideas. Therefore, people should think twice before opting for remote work.
